At Summer “Wonderous Night of Light and Shadow” for Binjiang Fans, Open-air Films Evoke Nostalgic Memories
Despite diverse entertainment options nowadays, open-air films remain a cherished cultural feast for many people as they arouse a nostalgic sentiment of an era and offer a down-to-earth cinematic experience.
The open-air film festival is a routine gift that Binjiang Property prepares for its proprietors every summer. There, Binjiang fans have enjoyed patriotic films, classic Hong Kong movies, sports films, as well as animation films, with each film serving as a flowing feast of light and shadow.
To offer more film options, this year’s “Wonderous Night of Light and Shadow” open-air film festival sets up three tracks, namely “My Country, My Family”, “Love for Comedy”, and “My Favorite Cartoon” for residential quarters to choose freely. While patriotic films and animations are still the mainstream choices for the open-air film festival, comedy films such as the newly released “Johnny Keep Walking!” and “YOLO” were also screened in many residential quarters to cater to the proprietors’ demand for popular films. As the night curtain fell, the open-air film began, and proprietors returning home from work gathered together to enjoy the pleasant cultural coolness in the summer.

To enhance the film-watching experience, the property management staff meticulously prepared snacks such as popcorn, marshmallows, mung bean soup, drinks, and watermelons. Some residential quarters even upgraded their professional screening equipment. Proprietors flocked together for a movie carnival.

In Hangzhou Lansong’aofu, “The River Red” directed by Zhang Yimou was screened. The film depicts a story of ordinary individuals who, inspired by Yue Fe’s patriotic spirit, sacrifice themselves for justice. At the end of the film, the truth was unveiled with the song “The River Red”, stirring profound feelings of patriotism among the audience. Proprietors were very satisfied with the selection of this meaningful patriotic film and expressed their expectations for more such events.
“My People, My Country” screened in Quzhou Chunjiangyue weaves seven stories on a small canvas, showcasing ordinary individuals against the backdrop of a grand era, illustrating the intimate connection between the individuals and the motherland. “The film showcases the extraordinary responsibility of ordinary individuals. I’m inspired by their selfless dedication and feel so proud of the great achievements accomplished by our motherland,” said Doctor Liu, a resident of Chunjiangyue.

The service center of Hangzhou The City Star invited a professional team to project “Boonie Bears: Time Twist”. The super-sized screen and professional projection equipment delivered cinema-level audiovisual effects. According to the service center, the 200 seats prepared by it were far from enough to meet the demand of proprietors, and the animation was so well-received by both adults and children that the audience didn’t leave until the film ended.

During the open-air screening of “Big Fish & Begonia” at Hangzhou Myriad Star, the steward Xingyue, dressed like an 80s youth and carrying a cold drink box on his back, distributed popsicles to the audience. In the moment of Chun’s first encounter with Kun in the film, outside the screen, the nostalgia and modernity blend.
Comedy films always trigger bursts of laughter while also provoking profound reflections on real society. In Hangzhou Binjiang Noble Lake, Lake Villa, and Dream Lake, “YOLO”, “Johnny Keep Walking!”, and “Pegasus 2” were screened. Many residents were reluctant to leave after the film ended. “It was a very good experience to watch a movie just at the doorstep. My child is also very excited. It reminds me of my happy childhood days,” said a proprietor in Lake Villa. In Dream Lake, where most proprietors have not yet moved in, the property management staff extended invitations to proprietors, inviting them to enjoy the open-air film at their future home. A proprietor shared on The Moment that the property management staff put service on top and didn’t muddle through due to the small number of proprietors.

Modern people are always busy working, regrettably leaving little time to go to the cinema with their families. However, the open-air film festival provides a chance to appreciate the beauty of light and shadow with their families. Proprietors from various residential quarters who have fully enjoyed the open-air film festival expressed a common voice: it was like reliving the nostalgic days deep in their memories to watch open-air films with family and neighbors, experience the ups and downs of cinematic life, and draw inspirations to move forward.
